Welcome to www.wood-spill.org
The wood-spill project is a cooperation between Thuringia in Germany and Carinthia in Austria focused on increasing the use of wood-spill, from the forestry industry, as an energy source. It is part of the enable project funded through Interreg III C.
Up until recently, the spill produced during culling and harvesting of forests has not been used. Fluctuations in the energy market and the increased interest in sustainable forestry has increased the interest in taking care of the biomass and turn it in to thermal or electrical energy.
The networks idea is to share the regional knowledge and combine it with European experiences in order to put the participating regions in a truly competitive position. Topics addressed in this combined effort are:
- What is the energy content of spill produced in connection with the harvesting of forests?
- The economics of producing energy from the spill is closely linked to the logistics and technologies deployed but little information exists on the available options and is often highly regionalised.
- Decentralising the refinement can save in transportation and storage but the investments carries a lot of risk since no research has been done on where and to what degree refinement can be done.
- Knowledge existing among the foresters is wasted as there is no natural way for them to share and discuss this knowledge with other foresters and/or researchers.
